The 2025 WNBA All-Star Game in Indianapolis is expected to draw a lot of attention. Caitlin Clark will undoubtedly be the center of attention. Not only will the game take place on her home court, but she also turned down an invitation to take part in a 3-point shooting contest at the NBA All-Star Weekend to make sure that her first shooting competition would take place in Indiana.
Nevertheless, a future reboot of the 3-point shooting contest between Sabrina Ionescu and Steph Curry isn’t off the table quite yet. Ionescu said on Sue Bird’s new podcast, Bird’s Eye View, that it will likely be back eventually with some new faces. Clark is the name everyone thinks about adding to the mix. Cynthia Cooper has another kind of 3-point contest in mind for the WNBA All-Star Weekend, though.
“You know what I want to see?” she said when she appeared on All The Smoke. “You know, so many people talked about Sabrina and Steph, you know, with that 3-point shooting contest. You know what I want to see in the WNBA All-Star Game? I want to see Sabrina Ionescu shoot against Caitlin Clark.”
A Clark-Ionescu 3-point contest would draw a lot of attention
The NBA All-Star Weekend is struggling. Fans are increasingly complaining about the lack of competitiveness. Two years ago, the 3-point shooting contest between Sabrina Ionescu and Steph Curry was the uncontested highlight of the weekend. So, it was not surprising to see the NBA pursuing Caitlin Clark for a similar endeavour. Her presence would draw tons of viewers to the event.
But why shouldn’t the WNBA use her draw to its advantage first? What Cynthia Cooper outlined would be a dream event at WNBA All-Star Weekend and would surely cause viewership numbers to skyrocket. Ionescu and Clark are both incredibly competitive players who would provide the perfect energy for such a contest. So, it would be an incredibly fun event to watch for fans.
For the league, it would be the perfect opportunity to promote and showcase two of its most popular players and prove that the WNBA doesn’t need NBA players to turn such an event into a highlight.
Caitlin Clark’s 3-point shooting has been on full display early in the 2025 season
Caitlin Clark may only have played two preseason games and one regular-season game, but her shooting has already been on full display. In the Fever’s season opener, she made four of her eight 3-point attempts.
None of those shots topped the highlight of the Fever’s preseason game against the Brazilian national team, though. Clark returned to Iowa for that game and made a long three from where she broke the NCAA scoring record.
