With WNBA free agency set to open up on January 21, ESPN released a roundtable column discussing the moves WNBA writers predicted were on the way in the coming weeks.
The article included writers Alexa Philippou, Kevin Pelton, and Michael Voepel. Voepel, in particular had some predictions for the Indiana Fever.
Voepel expects that one name Fever fans should keep their eyes on is Connecticut Sun forward Brionna Jones. Jones played for new Fever head coach Stephanie White for the past two seasons, leading Voepel to believe a reunion could be on the way.
"Brionna Jones, who has spent her eight-season WNBA career with the Connecticut Sun, is the kind of consistent, dependable veteran post player who could be a key player for a team looking to make a championship push," wrote Voepel. "The free agency decisions of her Sun teammates Alyssa Thomas and DeWanna Bonner will also be closely watched."
Speaking of big free agents in the front court, Voepel also mentions Indiana as a team that may be interested.
"Sabally turns 27 in April and is in her prime, but she also comes with a big question due to the injuries she has dealt with for much of her career with Dallas," Voepel wrote. "Does a team such as Indiana put together a trade offer for Sabally as a key contributor toward a title?"
Pelton also chimed in on the Fever, stating that Indiana has the most upside in free agency. He expects the Fever to assign Kelsey Mitchell a core designation, meaning that she can be traded rather than lost in free agency. If she returns to the team, something White has made apparent she wants to do, the Fever are just a few pieces away from making a run.
"The Fever are set at center and in the backcourt -- barring a Mitchell trade -- so they should be in the mix for the top forwards on the market," Pelton wrote. "I'm curious to see what kind of a draw playing with [Caitlin] Clark is for free agents."
Voepel then capped off the column by stating that he believes the Fever will sign a big name in free agency this offseason. The big names on the market that make sense: Jones from the Sun, Kelsey Plum from the Las Vegas Aces, and any other wing in free agency.
Voepel believes the appeal of playing for White, and playing with Caitlin Clark and Aliyah Boston, should attract stars.
