The Indiana Fever have reportedly acquired Phoenix Mercury guard Sophie Cunningham and a No. 19 pick in the WNBA draft in a three-way trade that includes forward NaLyssa Smith and a No. 8 pick being sent to the Dallas Wings.

Cunningham, who played 6 seasons with the Mercury adds quick tempo which will fit in nicely to offensive schemes with Caitlin Clark and company. She averaged 10 points per game and just under 40% 3-point shooting over the last three seasons.

As for Phoenix, they will receive Satou Sabally from Dallas, Kalani Brown and Sevgi Uzun. Moving Smith should not come as a big surprise after she was open about her frustrations regarding a loss of playing time last season under then head coach Christie Sides. It was move that Fever fans likely saw coming especially with the new moves being made within their ownership and coaching staff.

For the Fever who, after making quick moves early in the signing period, are showing the entire league that they are investing in a winning culture and are committed to competing for championships now. Bringing in a strong, defensive minded player such as Natasha Howard from Dallas and now Cunningham from Phoenix adds experience and much needed depth, a topic that has been much talked about all off-season.

After re-signing Kelsey Mitchell just days ago the Fever still found themselves in good position to make these moves after having $400,000 in cap space available and plenty of room to make these additions. With the Smith trade it is possible that the Fever still make a push for one more major move due to creating more cap space.
