Kelsey Mitchell’s future with Indiana Fever appears to already be decided
By Elaine Blum
The Indiana Fever are preparing for a new era of basketball—one that features a lot of winning. After making the playoffs in 2024, the team seems to be gearing up for contention. As a result, the franchise already made some significant changes. They have a new coach and new faces in the front office.
The Fever’s big three, it seems, will not change, though. Caitlin Clark’s and Aliyah Boston’s immediate futures with the team were never in question. Clark and Boston won the last two Rookie of the Year awards and have the potential to form one of the most lethal duos in the WNBA. Both have already proven that they are future superstars.
Kelsey Mitchell’s future was not as secure. Mitchell excelled next to Clark during the 2024 season, averaging 19.2 points and shooting 40.2 percent from three. It seemed that she was a great backcourt partner for Clark, but her upcoming unrestricted free agency put her future with the team in question.
It appears that is no longer the case.
Stephanie White included Kelsey Mitchell in the Fever’s big three
During her introductory press conference, Stephanie White talked about how important it was for the Fever to find the right supporting pieces to put around the team’s “core three.” Stars like Clark and Boston must be surrounded by the right role players. That is how you build a championship roster and put your best players in the position to succeed.
But who is the third player White mentioned? Fans figured it had to be Mitchell, which would then suggest that the Fever were definitely planning to bring her back.
Scott Agness, who covers Indiana basketball for The Athletic, confirmed fans' suspicions on X, noting that White mentioned Mitchell in an interview with him. White also sat down for a 1-on-1 interview with Pat Boylan for Inside Fever Basketball, in which she specifically mentioned Mitchell as the third member of the Fever’s big three.
So, it seems fans can rest easy, and Mitchell’s future with the Fever is decided already. Now, as White said, the Fever just have to round out the rest of the roster. With a generational talent like Clark on the roster, the Fever won’t have much room to take things slow, and fans should expect an aggressive offseason.
Satou Sabally is one of the names that has been connected to the Fever, but there are plenty of other star players who will want to play with Clark and eventually compete for a championship in Indiana.
