The NaLyssa Smith saga continues in Indiana, Fever forward makes a statement on social media
Indiana Fever forward NaLyssa Smith has hinted at the fact that she and the Fever organization have been at odds this offseason, though nothing has been explicitly stated.
Smith's latest Instagram story has all but confirmed that she wants out of Indianapolis.
Smith, at roughly 12:19pm on Monday, posted a black screen on her story with the words, "life is all about knowing [your] worth, don't stay nowhere [you] not wanted [and] appreciated."
This is not the first time Smith has sent out a cryptic message on social media
While nothing has been released from the Fever at the time this article was published, there have been many clues this offseason that have suggested a NaLyssa Smith exit from Indiana.
Following the Fever's first round exit at the hands of the Connecticut Sun, Smith removed the Indiana Fever account from her Instagram bio. This certainly turned some heads, but no action came from the Fever's front office to suggest shopping Smith.
The drama continued after the Fever hired new head coach Stephanie White. During her opening press conference and interview, White stated that she wanted to build her contender around a "Big 3" of Caitlin Clark, Kelsey Mitchell, and Aliyah Boston. She made no mention of the former second-overall pick, leading many to speculate that Smith's relationship with the team was shakier than it seemed.
That brings us to the present, in which no form of reconciliation between Smith and the Fever appears to have taken place.
The Fever and Smith will likely part ways this offseason, and even though Smith is under contract through next season the Fever can do it in a couple of different ways.
The first is a trade, which will be the most beneficial for the Fever. With forward Temi Fagbenle stepping up overseas this offseason, she may be able to fill Smith's role in the starting lineup. This would allow Indiana to exchange Smith for the wing player that they need.
The second way is a bit murkier, and that would be to leave Smith unprotected in the Golden State Valkyries expansion draft. Smith would likely be the most talented player the Valkyries would have access to in the league and would almost definitely take her as their pick from Indiana's roster.
Since the Fever would get nothing for Smith in this scenario, expect the trade rumors to swirl in the coming weeks.
