ESPN hosts Andraya Carter, Chiney Ogwumike, and Elle Duncan are logging serious WNBA hours today as they offer commentary on games.
Ahead of the Aces and Liberty's kick-off, the three played a game in which Duncan asked a question and Ogwumike and Carter had to offer their responses as quickly as possible. One question in particular jumped out at fans, especially due to Carter's answer. Duncan asked if this season's MVP was on the floor now — meaning a member of the Liberty or the Aces — and both women said no. They then gave their responses for who they believe the MVP will be; Ogwumike answered Napheesa Collier, and Carter answered Caitlin Clark.
Caitlin Clark has a shot at MVP in 2025
Carter isn't the only person who supports an end to the 2025 WNBA Season that sees Clark named MVP, a title that has been won by A'ja Wilson and Breanna Stewart in recent years. There's plenty of reasons to expect Clark will lead the league in assists for the second year in a row and to the Fever's first playoff win since 2015 — and assuming she pulls off those feats, MVP isn't a stretch by anyone's imagination.
Carter's admission gives credence to a drum that Fever fans have been beating for weeks, if not months — the idea of Clark as MVP sounds a lot more realistic when an expect of the game claims it.
Coach Stephanie White has had high praise for Caitlin Clark so far
Another expert in the game has also heaped praise on Clark throughout the preseason: her coach, Stephanie White. “She’s far beyond her years in terms of her understanding of how to work,”White said via the Fever’s X account this month. “Oftentimes you see rookies, even the great ones, where it usually takes three years for them to figure it out. She’s got it figured out.”
Clark and the Indiana Fever didn't have the strongest start last season and ended up with only two wins in their first ten games. But the team came back strong after the Olympic break and ended up in the playoffs, a huge accomplishment given their track record in years prior.
The addition of vets like DeWanna Bonner, Sophie Cunningham, and Sydney Colson will also go a long way in terms of supporting Clark's stated goal of winning the championship this season. And, from the sound of it, if the team can pull that off (or even come close), MVP could very well be in the bag.
