The 2025 WNBA Draft is almost here, and it will be an exciting day. Paige Bueckers, one of the brightest stars in college basketball, is finally entering the WNBA despite some rumors that she did not want to play for the Dallas Wings. Olivia Miles’ decision to stay in college instead of declaring for the draft scrambled the draft board, as she was widely expected to be drafted second overall. The Golden State Valkyries will get to make the franchise’s first draft pick, and new international talent, like Dominique Malonga, will be added to the WNBA. There is plenty to look forward to for all basketball fans out there.
The Indiana Fever are not at the center of all of the excitement this year. After three years with top draft picks and generational talents heading to Indiana, the Fever do not even have a first-round pick.
The Fever originally held the eighth pick in this year’s draft but traded it to the Connecticut Sun in a massive multi-team trade in February that sent Alyssa Thomas and Satou Sabally to the Phoenix Mercury. Indiana sent NaLyssa Smith to the Dallas Wings and the eighth pick to the Connecticut Sun in return for Sophie Cunningham and the 19th pick in this year’s draft.
The Fever want to compete for a title this season. So, they did not need another first-round pick. Instead, they needed veterans who could space the floor and play defense to put around Caitlin Clark and Aliyah Boston. The Fever found plenty of those players this offseason, as Indiana quickly emerged as a favorable destination for veteran players.
Nevertheless, the Fever have a chance to add some young talent in the second round of the draft. The Fever have two second-round picks this year and can use those picks to bring in role players who can do a little bit of everything. Iowa Hawkeyes Lucy Olsen and Sydney Affolter, for example, could be solid options with ties to Caitlin Clark, but there will also be plenty of other options available.
Second-round picks do not always have it easy in the WNBA due to the limited number of roster spots available, and the Fever already have a stacked roster. So, there is no guarantee that whoever the Fever pick will make the roster for this season. Nevertheless, it cannot hurt for the Fever to have the draft rights to some solid role players and allow them to develop elsewhere for a while.
