The Indiana Fever are back in contention but were bounced in the first round of the WNBA playoffs. Caitlin Clark’s historic rookie season brought new popularity and proved she is already elite. The 22-year-old broke the WNBA’s assists record, ran the top offense after the Olympic break, and created points for every player on the floor. Nobody expected her to reach this level so quickly, but that is what the all-time greats do.

Things are changing around Clark. The Fever hired Kelly Krauskopf to run the front office and she just brought in Amber Cox as general manager. Lin Dunn is staying with the team, but will no longer be the top decision-maker. Indiana knows it needs more talent, and Krauskopf has plenty of experience building a contender around a legend from her days with Tamika Catchings.

Indiana made several mistakes with Clark this season, but a glaring one remained in the playoffs. It may take a fresh coach, but the Fever must keep their superstar at the center of the attack in 2025.

Fever cannot let Caitlin Clark go multiple positions without touching the ball

Clark is the best offensive creator in the W. She led the league in assists and was fifth in scoring. The 22-year-old is a walking bucket, and she loves finding an open teammate. No team stopper her this season. Clark will be better in year two and deserves even more touches.

She should be the primary ball-handler, but the 6’0 guard cannot bring the ball up the floor every position. All the elite teams have multiple creators, but they find ways to get their best players involved. Whether coming off screens or using effective cuts, the Fever must create opportunities to get Clark open when she is not the play’s primary initiator.

Head coach Christie Sides used her in an off-ball role too often and needed more ways to scheme her open. Clark had a massive usage rate, but it felt like things fell down in the playoffs when she was not creating. The Fever must improve their talent and find ways to keep CC at the center of their attack.

Teams will force the ball out of Clark’s hands. That is their best chance to defeat the Fever, and the franchise must be better equipped to combat it in year two. Clark must improve without the ball, and Indiana needs to make her touches a focus.

The Indiana Fever want to build a championship roster around Caitlin Clark as soon as possible. They have a fresh front office and assets at their disposal. Stay tuned to see if the franchise makes it a reality.
