Erica Wheeler sets record straight on playing with Caitlin Clark
By Tyler Watts
The Indiana Fever are back. Tamika Catching made them one of the best teams in the WNBA for 12 straight years, but the franchise has not made the playoffs since her retirement in 2016. That is changing with Caitlin Clark. The rookie is already being compared to be the best players in the world and keeps proving her doubters wrong.
WNBA legend Sheryl Swoopes had some interesting takes on the Fever when she joined Gil’s Arena on Sept. 17, including say Clark is not dominant. The three-time MVP also stated that some players on the Fever do not want to be in Indiana because of other outside factors.
Those comments were quickly linked to Caitlin Clark and the media frenzy she brings by observers. The rookie is already the most popular player in the W, but does that make her teammates not want to play with her? Erica Wheeler set the record on Wednesday.
Eric Wheeler says Fever are having fun with Caitlin Clark
The veteran was asked how much fun the team was having this season, and she wasted no time mentioning Clark.
"All we do is have fun with Caitlin Clark, who never takes anything serious. I tell people all the time she's really a kid at heart.”
The 33-year-old continued by seemingly shooting down Swoopes' comments, and she even added a bit more on Twitter.
Wheeler has played in the WNBA for a decade and has spent time with four different franchises. The 5’7 guard's experience and leadership made her the perfect player for this question.
She hasn't played in the playoffs since 2016 and is eager to be on a winning roster.
Indiana is embracing the uptick in popularity and having a generational talent at the top of their roster. Clark is a playmaker who gets her teammates involved. She has been the engine behind the Fever snapping their seven-year playoff drought, and women want to play next to CC.
Indiana is 9-4 since the Olympic break as Clark has taken her game to a new level. They are the sixth seed in the playoffs, but there is belief the Fever can make a run. Things are coming together at the right time, and Clark is finally settling in against the stiffer competition in the W. Fans saw the 22-year-old raise her game on the biggest stages in college and it may happen again in this year's playoffs.
The Indiana Fever are just getting started and more players will soon be eager to team with Caitlin Clark. She is already the face of the league and will quickly be in the running for best player. There is already no stopping her, and the 6’0 guard is years away from her prime. When she makes the Fever a title contender, there will be plenty more interest.
What is next for Clark and the Fever? Stay tuned to find out. Fans can be sure her teammates will have her back. Clark hopes to lift the franchise in the playoffs, but it is easier said than done.
