The Indiana Fever were nothing short of aggressive in this year's free agency. In fact, it is safe to say they made very unexpected moves given their track history (the Fever has had top 4 draft picks since 2018 and is somewhat accustomed to being aggressive in the draft).
The moves by some players made things simpler for the Fever. Kristy Wallace is electing to sit out the season, a decision that will free up the team's cap space a bit (her annual salary was $80,823). But other moves, such as the departure of Katie Lou Samuelson, complicated things for the team.
But all that is said and done, and now the team is locking in to focus on the next great hurdle: training camp.
The Fever had three overall picks in this year's draft. Unfortunately, the team's limited cap space means it's not likely all three will make the final roster. Due to this limited space, the Fever will almost certainly be required to make room by the mid-point of the season.
What moves could the Fever make at the midway point?
With all this in mind, it's important to realize there are a total of five players competing for one spot on an already crowded roster with multiple positions stacked. It is expected that given the financial position the Fever will be in this season they will almost inevitably have to make a roster move at the halfway point of the season.
The EuroBasket championships — which will take place during two weeks of the WNBA season in June — could influence what roster move the Fever makes, especially if the team is considering adding an international player. However, the Fever haven't historically been known to add players in the middle of the season, and in the past, they've released players during the regular season, but didn't replenish the roster.
While they could look at international players or pick up a player via trade/free agency, it's worth bearing in mind that the WNBA is much different then other sports leagues. There is no trade deadline, and teams are free to sign players until the last day of the regular season as needed to fit their team's needs. These rules and regulations make it easier on teams to make additions in a pinch.
For the Fever, the dynamic isn't a losing one. They're stacked in every position and the team's anticipated roster boasts various levels of experience, something that wasn't always true in previous years. If they can keep their roster healthy for most of the season, cap space and carrying a limited number on the roster shouldn't impact them in the long run.
