Kelsey Mitchell signs with new team (and the impact on the Fever)
By Tyler Watts
The Indiana Fever want to upgrade their roster around Caitlin Clark, and new president Kelly Krauskopf has a plan. It starts with the free agency of Kelsey Mitchell. The two-time All-Star is set to be unrestricted but is core eligible. Fans are hoping she decides to stay in Indiana, and the franchise wants her back.
Mitchell played in Athletes Unlimited in the 2023 offseason with Fever teammates Lexi Hull and Grace Berger. She finished ninth on the leaderboard, but the 5’8 guard is taking her talents elsewhere.
Mitchell signed to play with Shanxi in the WCBA this offseason. She figures to be one of the best players in the league, but what does it mean for her time with the Fever?
Fever fans should not worry about Kelsey Mitchell playing in China
Mitchell will play in the WCBA this offseason, but it will not affect her WNBA status. NaLyssa Smith is also playing in this league with a host of other WNBA talents. They will all return for the 2025 season in April.
Expect Mitchell to be in the running for MVP of the WCBA. This was a massive signing for Shanxi and should significantly improve their standing. Fever supporters should keep a close eye on her play, and this move should help her continue to grow her game.
Mitchell will not return to Athletes Unlimited this year. Caitlin Clark plans to have a relaxing offseason, so Fever fans may not get to see much of their talent. There will be more announcements, so be on the lookout for what the players are doing in their down time.
Kelly Krauskopf made it clear that Mitchell is a crucial piece of Indiana’s future during her introductory press conference. The Fever want to bring her back, but must find a contract that works for both sides. Mitchell gives the franchise one of the best backcourts in the W. Indiana should have more talent around their Big 3 in 2025 and hopes to be a serious title contender.
This is a crucial offseason for the Indiana Fever. Caitlin Clark is already one of the best players in the WNBA, and the franchise wants to return to its glory days. Krauskopf built multiple successful teams around Tamika Catchings and plans to do the same with Clark. Can the Fever get their second championship? Only time will tell, but it won’t be for lack of trying.
