What's next for Caitlin Clark? Offseason plans, return date, odds of exhibitions
By Tyler Watts
The Indiana Fever were swept by the Connecticut Sun in the first round of the playoffs, but fans witnessed a historic rookie season from Caitlin Clark. She was an All-Star, broke several unfathomable records, and finished fourth in MVP voting as a 22-year-old. Clark helped the W reach new heights and is just getting started.
It has been a wild year for the Fever’s star. She went directly from leading the University of Iowa to the NCAA Finals into the WNBA season. Clark has played for 11 consecutive months in a game-changing whirlwind. She has been historic and jaw-dropping, but fans wonder what is next.
There are several options for players, including going overseas. Fans will see many of the WNBA’s best play in Unrivaled or the Athletes Unlimited League, but where does Clark land? The 22-year-old has options, and here is the latest on her plans.
Caitlin Clark is unlikely to play in Unrivaled or Athletes Unlimited League
Unrivaled has announced 22 of their 30 players for their inaugural season. Fans will see Angel Reese in this league starting in January, but Clark does not appear to be taking part.
Several of her Fever teammates play in the Athletes Unlimited League, including Kelsey Mitchell. This feels more likely, but remains a long shot. Clark addressed her offseason plans after their loss on Sept. 25.
Fans will see the 22-year-old phenom on the golf course before the basketball court. She needs a break, but her desire to make Team USA may push her into a different venture.
Will Caitlin Clark play in 3x3 USA Basketball?
3x3 Basketball is a massive commitment. Players and teams earn points for competing in events. The system rewards the most active participants with several games happening during the WNBA season.
Clark would certainly ball out in 3-on-3 basketball, but playing in enough to qualify for the marquee events like the Olympics is almost impossible. The system was purposely created to make it difficult for NBA and WNBA players to take part and is why Team USA struggles.
Fans will not see Clark representing her country, so how long before she plays her next game?
When will Caitlin Clark play again?
The 2025 WNBA regular season will not kick off until mid-May 2025. Things will be pushed back because there will be no Olympic break. Preseason contests will begin in early May, but fans may have seen the last of Clark for seven-plus months.
She will be working on her game, and the Fever must create a title contender around her. New president Kelly Krausopf won’t waste any time and plans to add the right fits around the young superstar.
Odds of Caitlin Clark appearing in exhibitions
This may be the most intriguing thing for Clark. Taking her talents overseas for an exhibition contest against one of the best teams in Europe could make a fortune. There will be significant offers, but it sounds like the 22-year-old wants to relax and recover after a grueling year of basketball.
Do not rule this out completely. If the payday gets large enough, Clark may be headed on an exhibition tour before the start of the 2025 season.
Fans hope Caitlin Clark changes her mind and decides to link up with some team this offseason. There is nothing wrong with a rest, but the franchise does not want her to be idle for seven months. The Athlete’s Unlimited League is the most likely, but the odds appear slim for her suiting up before the start of the WNBA season in May 2025.
It will be a long wait, but well worth it. The Indiana Fever have the brightest young star in basketball, and imagine what Caitlin Clark can become with a full offseason to work on her game. The rest of the W is already on notice, and no team will want to face the Fever.
